Te Roti (Loan & Mercantile Company)

This short lived creamery was built by the Loan & Mercantile Company to supply cream for their butter factory at Mangatoki with the settlers guaranteeing the milk from 400 cows.

The creamery was operational by September 1899 but quickly faced stiff competition from the nearby Te Roti creamery established by the Eltham Co-operative company around the same time.

During its first season, the suppliers to the Loan & Mercantile Company made arrangements to purchase the main factory at Mangatoki together with the branch creameries including Te Roti and form a co-operative company (Mangatoki). At the end of its first season, the Mangatoki Co-op closed its Te Roti branch leaving the way clear for the Eltham Co-op Te Roti creamery to handle the milk.

Unclear whether there are any physical remains (foundations etc) but these appear unlikely given the aerial photo of the likely location below.
