The Purangi creamery was built on part of section 8 owned by Mr AE Webb around late 1900 to supply cream to the Tarata Co-operative Dairy Company Limited butter factory about 14km away. It appears that a cottage was also built for the creamery manager.
Milk was delivered to the creamery in 20 gallon cans from carts, sledges or trolleys. The state of the clay roads made delivering milk a difficult task. A Tangye 8hp engine supplied power to drive a separator, skim milk pump and a water pump to supply water for cooking and washing. A small high pressure boiler provided steam for sterilising and hot water for washing.
The manager Bill Newman delivered the separated cream by horse and cart to the Tarata butter factory which was no mean feat given the 28km round trip.
The last entry for this creamery is 1908 but it appears to have been operating until the end of the 1908-1909 season after which it was sold by the Tarata Co-operative Dairy Company Limited to the Clifton County Council in 1910 for conversion for use as a surfaceman’s house.
Possibly the only remains of the creamery are a concrete foundation.
