When Oaonui settlers bought the Crown company creamery to form a co-operative in 1896, a number of farmers did not want to supply to the co-op and so the Crown company built a creamery in Mr E O’Sullivan’s paddock on the banks of the Moutoti stream.

The creamery went up rapidly and opened on 15 October 1896 with Mr Garner as the first Manager.

Disaster struck at 11pm on 29 February 1904 when the creamery burnt down. It was rapidly rebuilt and appears to have carried on until around 1907-1908.

Lightning struck the old creamery building in 1911 causing some damage and the creamery building was offered for sale in 1917.
